Once Upon A Time is returning to the UK. Netflix UK has acquired the exclusive UK broadcast rights to the ABC drama series starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison and Lana Parrilla after agreeing a deal with international distributor Disney Media Distribution.
Netflix’s deal for Once Upon A Time covers all four seasons of the show, with the first three seasons and the first 14 episodes of the fourth season now available to stream. New episodes will continue be made available every Wednesday, just days after they air on ABC in the United States.
This marks the first time that the third and fourth seasons of Once Upon A Time have been available to view in the UK. Channel 5 initially acquired the series and aired the first two seasons between 2012-2013 before subsequently failing to reach a deal with Disney for the third season. At the time, C5’s decision to drop the show was said to be a strategic one, rather than being driven by ratings.
Netflix UK’s acquisition of Once Upon A Time is the latest example of the streaming service “riding to the rescue” after a show with an ardent fan base has been dropped by a traditional UK broadcaster. Netflix UK previously did the same with the likes of Breaking Bad, Californication and most recently Pretty Little Liars.
