Michael Chiklis (The Shield, Sons Of Anarchy) and Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Suburgatory) are set to star in NBC’s comedy pilot Cuckoo, which is an adaptation of the BBC Three series of the same name.
Cuckoo follows a middle-class family whose daughter returns home from a summer abroad married to a charming but infuriating eccentric named Cuckoo, much to her father’s annoyance.
Michael Chiklis will play Ken, the father of the family featured in the comedy; while Cheryl Hines will play Ken’s wife Lori. The duo joins a cast which also includes Rachel DiPillo (Jane The Virgin) and Flula Borg.
The US adaptation was penned by original series creators Robin French & Kieron Quirke and Tim Long – who is on-board as showrunner. Lionsgate Television and Roughcut Television are producing, with French, Quirke, Long and Ash Atalla set to executive produce.
This marks the second time that NBC has attempted to adapt Cuckoo for the US market. It is part of a recent development trend which has seen numerous networks attempt adaptations of popular British series. None of those attempts have been successful, however, with the likes of Spy, Gates and ABC’s adaptation of Only Fools And Horse failing to secure series orders.
