IFC has handed out a straight-to-series order to Benders, a single-camera comedy about a group of friends who bond over a hockey team which hails from Maron production company Apostle, Jim Serpico and Tom Sellitti.
Benders (formerly known as Uncle Chubby’s) follows several friends bonded by an irrational obsession for their beer-swilling amateur hockey league. Their skills may be limited but their passion is not, as evidenced by the chaos hockey creates in their everyday lives. This isn’t fast-paced, brawler-style hockey. It’s the slow motion, falling-down version.
The comedy series, which has received an order for eight half-hour episodes, was created by Jim Serpico & Tom Sellitti and is being produced by Apostle. Serpico and Sellitti are penning the scripts and will also serve as executive producers alongside Sirens EP Dennis Leary. Production is eyed to begin this Spring for a 2015 premiere.
“Benders is exactly the type of fresh, original comedy that complements our existing programming slate. Hockey knowledge not required, these guys are all about their beer and their bros,” said Jennifer Caserta, President of IFC. “We’re also excited to continue our relationship with Apostle, they have been a great creative partner for us on Maron.”
Benders is the latest addition to IFC’s growing scripted line up for 2015. The network’s scripted comedy slate for the year also includes new miniseries The Spoils Before Dying as well as the new seasons of Maron, Portlandia and The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret.
