Has Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions found their villain for Star Trek 3.
Variety is reporting that Luther and The Wire star Idris Elba is being eyed to take on a key role in the third feature film in the rebooted Star Trek series. While Elba is expected to play the villain, Variety notes that exact details of the role are being kept under wraps, though the Klingons are said to be the primary antagonists in the new movie.
Star Trek would mark the latest feature film role for Elba, who is arguably best known for his TV work on the aforementioned The Wire and Luther – which is returning for a two-part special on BBC One and BBC America. He has previously starred in such films as Pacific Rim, Prometheus and range of Marvel titles including Thor and both Avengers films.
The casting news comes shortly after the studio set Simon Pegg and Doug Jung to take the latest stab at the script, which had previously been worked on by Roberto Orci, Patrick McKay and John D. Payne. In a recent interview, Pegg said that they were under a tight schedule and needed to deliver the script by June, when production is set to start.
The as-yet untitled third Star Trek film is set to be released in on July 8th 2016. Justin Lin is attached to helm the feature, which is being produced by J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burke, Roberto Orci and David Ellison.
