ABC has found the co-lead for Delores & Jermaine.
The View moderator Whoopi Goldberg has signed on to co-star opposite Jermaine Fowler in the half-hour multi-camera comedy pilot, which hails from Fowler, Danny Chun and ABC’s sister studio ABC Studios, TVWise has learned.
Penned by Jermaine Fowler and Danny Chun, Delores & Jermaine tells the story of a millennial (Jermaine Fowler) who moves in with his strict estranged grandmother, a football-loving former cop who needs Jermaine’s youthful enthusiasm just as much as he needs her parenting.
Whoopi Goldberg will play Delores, a former cop and Jermaine’s grandmother. The media icon, repped by CAA, finally boarded the project after prolonged negotiations with ABC Studios. A key sticking point was ensuring that the pilot would shoot in New York, and thus allow Goldberg to continue to fulfil her duties on The View.
For Goldberg, this marks her first regular scripted television role since her short-lived NBC comedy Whoopi more than a decade ago. That said, she has been active in TV in her time on the view, with a recurring role on Glee, which is wrapping its six year run on Fox this season and a guest starring role on the ABC series 666 Park Avenue a couple of years ago. Her other television credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Middle and 30 Rock.
