Dick Wolf is drafting in a familiar face for a regular role on his new project Chicago Med.
S. Epatha Merkerson, who played Lieutenant Anita Van Buren for seventeen seasons on Dick Wolf’s Law & Order, has signed on for a regular role in Chicago Med, the proposed medical themed Chicago Fire spin-off.
Chicago Med, the proposed spin-off will follow the staff of the Chicago Medical hospital, which has featured in both Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. Like Chicago PD, the project has not received a traditional pilot order and will instead by piloted as a planted episode (or backdoor pilot) of Chicago Fire.
Per Deadline, S. Epatha Merkerson will play Sharon Goodwin, Chicago Med’s hospital administrator. Although she doesn’t love the politics that go into running a hospital and doesn’t suffer fools, she is damn good at keeping the doors open.
Merkerson, repped by ICM, is of course best known for her Law & Order role, but has also appeared on such shows as The Closer (in which she had a recurring role as a doctor) and Deception. She is the second actress to board the proposed spin-off and will co-star opposite Yaya DaCosta, while Dylan Baker is also being eyed for a key role.
If it goes to series Chicago Med, which is set up at Wolf Films and Universal Television, will become the second spin-off from Chicago Fire. The backdoor pilot is being penned by Michael Brandt, Derek Haas, Matt Olmstead and Dick Wolf and will air as the nineteenth episode of Chicago Fire’s third season.
