E4’s ‘My Mad Fat Diary’ To End With Third Season

My Mad Fat Diary - Season 2My Mad Fat Diary is coming to an end.

E4 has announced that the recently ordered third season, which will consist of just three one-hour episodes, down from the two previous six episode runs, will be the show’s last.

Based on the real life diaries of Rae Earl, My Mad Fat Diary takes an honest look at teenage life from the perspective of Rae Earl, a funny, music-mad teen who, despite an eccentric mother and her own body image and mental health issues, has a huge lust for life, love and trying to get laid.

The series, which is produced by Tiger Aspect Productions, stars Sharon Rooney, Ciara Baxendale, Dan Cohen, Jodie Comer, Jordan Murphy and Nico Mirallegro – all of whom are returning for the final season, which is set in 1998. Also joining the cast for the final three episodes is Faye Marsay (Fresh Meat), who will play Katie Springer.

The third and final season was penned by George Kay and is poised to be one of change. Rae has life as a teenager nailed. However, change is on the horizon as the gang grows up. Chloe has ambitions to attend business school, Finn wants to settle down and the spectre of university applications looms large, and a new friend forces Rae to see everything differently. Production begins this week, with E4 eyeing a Summer 2015 premiere.

“It has been a privilege to tell Rae’s story. My Mad Fat Diary has been a huge part of my life and, although I am sad that this amazing rollercoaster ride is almost over, it’s not over YET”, said series lead Sharon Rooney. “We have more drama, more tears and more rude bits to bring you. The support of the E4 audience has been amazing, and I couldn’t have done it without them. So, in the words of Rae, “LET’S DO THIS”.’

“My Mad Fat Diary has touched the hearts of the E4 audience and it is with both sadness and pride that we announce filming on the third and final series”, added Piers Wenger, Channel 4’s Head of Drama. “But anyone expecting Rae Earl to go quietly will be sorely mistaken. We’re delighted to welcome back Mad Fat’s exceptional cast, led by Sharon Rooney, as Rae faces her greatest challenges yet”.
