CBS is adding some Supernatural talent to the cast of Extant.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who had a recurring role on the WB/CW series as John Winchester, has been tapped for a co-starring role in the second season of the Halle Berry fronted summer series Extant, TVWise has learned.
From Mickey Fisher and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV, Extant stars Berry as Molly Woods, an astronaut trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space and discovers that she has been impregnated by an alien life-form.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, whose previous credits also include Magic City and Grey’s Anatomy, will play JD Richter, a mercenary/bounty hunter who is fearless, bordering on reckless, mostly because he’s got nothing to lose. He is the Everyman who thought he had seen everything until Molly Woods enters his life.
The former Supernatural alum is the first of a number of expected additions to the show’s cast for its upcoming 13 episode second season. As previously reported, Extant is heading in a new direction this season and will move away Molly’s (Halle Berry) work at the ISEA and focus on the search for her alien son who is threatening the human race.
That change in direction has already led to a number of cast changes, with original series regulars Michael O’Neill and Hiroyuki Sanada having exited the series. While Goran Visnjic and Camryn Manheim have been downgraded to recurring status and are expected to appear in a number of episodes at the start of season two. Returning as fully fledged regulars are Halle Berry, Pierce Gagnon, and Grace Gummer.
