CBS is getting in on the pilot game.
The network has handed out its first traditional pilot orders of the season with a pickup for an as-yet untitled legal drama from Grey’s Anatomy scribes Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, and a comedy starring stand up comedian Tommy Johnagin.
The untitled legal drama follows a smart, chic, successful defense lawyer at a boutique firm who shockingly gets romantically involved with one of her clients, who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime. Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, both of whom serve as consulting producers on the recently renewed Madam Secretary, will pen the script. CBS Television Studios is producing, with Phelan, Rater, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly serving as executive producers.
The Untitled Tommy Johnagin Project is inspired by the comedian’s life and hails from Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Bill Lawrence – all three of whom previously collaborated on the short-lived Fox comedy Surviving Jack. The half-hour effort follows a stand-up comic raising a family in his home town in the Midwest. Warner Bros. Television is producing with Lawrence, Schumacker, Halpern and Jeff Ingold set to executive produce.
These are the first traditional orders that CBS has handed out this pilot season, though they are developing a Criminal Minds spin-off starring Gary Sinise which is being piloted as a planted episode of the original series. The orders follows the recent spree of pickups from both NBC and Fox, who ordered a number of pilots over the past few days.
