Amazon Prime Instant Video UK is shifting Black Sails to a weekly release schedule for its second season.
The UK arm of the streaming service have announced plans to premiere the second season of the pirate drama on Sunday January 25th. New episodes will then made available to Prime members every Sunday, less than 24 hours after they initially air on Starz in the United States.
The shift towards a weekly release for the show, which has already been renewed for a third season, has been widely expected and follows the release pattern for other Amazon UK exclusive titles such as Constantine and Vikings. The only series to have been released under the “binge” model are those that have already wrapped their seasons in the US, Amazon originals and, in a rare move, the second season of Crossing Lines.
“We’re delighted to be making Season Two of Black Sails exclusively available to Prime Instant Video customers in the UK” said Chris Bird, Film & TV Strategy Director at Amazon Instant Video. “Incredibly popular among Amazon Prime Instant Video customers, Jonathan E. Steinberg, Robert Levine, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form delivered an outstanding first season of ’Black Sails.’ We’re excited to see what lies in store for viewers as this gripping new season unfolds.”
Created by Jonathan Steinberg, Black Sails is set 20 years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island and tells the story of Captain Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, and his men. The drama series stars Toby Stephens, Luke Arnold, Zach McGowan, Toby Schmitz, Hannah New, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Mark Ryan, Clara Paget and Tom Hopper.
In the 10 episode second season picks up immediately from the season one finale which saw The Walrus crew stranded, with an army of Spanish soldiers standing between them and the precious Urca gold. With their crimes against their brethren no longer a secret, Flint and Silver must join forces in a desperate bid for survival. Meanwhile, Eleanor Guthrie struggles to maintain her grip on Nassau, as a new breed of pirate arrives. As blood is spilled, and tensions mount, Charles Vane must decide which he values more: Eleanor’s life, or the respect of his men.
