Syfy UK has closed a deal with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to 12 Monkeys, TVWise has learned.
Penned by Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett, 12 Monkeys tells the story of a time traveller from a decimated future in a high-stakes race against the clock. Utilizing a dangerous and untested method of time travel, he journeys from 2043 to the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will all but annihilate the human race.
The series, which is based on the feature film of the same name, was ordered by the US Syfy network back in April as part of their aggressive push back into scripted drama, which has seen them green-light such series as Dominion, Ascension and The Expanse. It is produced by Universal Cable Productions and stars Aaron Stanford (Nikita), Amanda Schull (Pretty Little Liars), Noah Bean (Damages) and Kirk Acevedo (Fringe).
12 Monkeys is the latest acquisition made by Syfy UK in the past few months as they look to bolster their line-up of exclusive content. They previously inked deals to bring Dominion and the third season of Continuum to the channel; and just last month agreed a deal with CBS Studios International for the linear broadcast rights to the Halle Berry fronted Extant.
“Building on the world explored in the hit film, 12 Monkeys is a bold and exciting adaptation that we’re delighted to be premiering on Syfy in the UK”, said Nicky Douglas, Managing Director of Universal Networks International’s UK arm. “Taking viewers on a gripping time-travel adventure, the series explores themes of destiny and human survival through an action-packed, fast-paced story that is sure to entice fans of the original film and new viewers, alike.”
The 13 episode first season of 12 Monkeys is expected to premiere on Syfy UK in February 2015.
