TNT has renewed their hit drama series Rizzoli & Isles for a sixth season, slated to air next Summer.
Created by Tess Gerritsen and developed for television by Janet Tamaro, Rizzoli & Isles revolves around Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon), a tough-as-nails Boston police detective, and Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander), a smart, impeccably dressed medical examiner from a privileged background. Despite being complete opposites, the two women share an offbeat chemistry and strong working relationship that lets them solve complex murder mysteries in the city of Boston. Lorraine Bracco, Bruce McGill, Jordan Bridges and Brian Goodman also star.
The fifth season of the show, which returns to TNT to wrap its run in February, ranked as Cable’s Number One Show, with an L7 audience of 7.6 million viewers. 18 episodes have been ordered for the season six, making it the biggest order the show has ever received (though one episode less than the last few pick ups for TNT’s flagship series Major Crimes).
The renewal for an extended sixth season comes after months of negotiations between TNT and series producer Warner Horizon Television. Initially the talks had been focussed on a two season renewal, for a total of 30 episodes (15 across each). But after Kevin Reilly was appointed as Michael Wright’s replacement, he mandated a renewal for a single season, at which point the discussion focused on the episode order.
With the sixth season order, TNT has now decided on the fate of every single one of their scripted entries. The Turner owned cable network previously handed out renewals to Falling Skies, Murder In The First, Major Crimes, The Last Ship and Legends; whilst also cancelling Dallas, Franklin & Bash and Perception. They also have new dramas Public Morals, Proof and Agent X on tap for 2015.
