CBS’ Summer series Extant is undergoing something of a cast shakeup.
Series regulars Michael O’Neill (The West Wing, Bates Motel) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Helix) are exiting and will not appear in the show’s 13 episode second season, TVWise has confirmed.
Per Deadline, the show will be moving away from Molly’s (Halle Berry) work at the ISEA in its second season and will focus on the search for her alien son who is threatening the human race. That move meant there was no room for either Michael O’Neill or Hiroyuki Sanada, who played the head of the ISEA and the man who bankrolled the program, respectively.
In addition to the departure of O’Neill and Sanada, the show is making other changes to cast. Returning as fully fledged regulars are Halle Berry as Molly, Pierce Gagnon as Molly’s android son Ethan, and Grace Gummer as Julie. Meanwhile, season one regulars Goran Visnjic and Camryn Manheim have been downgraded to recurring status and are expected to appear in a number of episodes at the start of season two.
With the changes, series producer CBS Television Studios and Amblin Television are expected to cast a number of new regulars for the show’s second season. Production begins in the New Year, with the show’s second season being eyed for a berth on CBS’ 2015 summer schedule alongside James Patterson adaptation Zoo and the third season of Under The Dome.
