Critically acclaimed director Justin Lin has been tapped to helm Star Trek 3.
Justin Lin, who is well known for helming the Fast & Furious franchise and is coming off of directing the opening episodes of True Detective season 2, is set to direct the feature film from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions, Deadline reports.
He replaces Roberto Orci, who was initially set to helm the film before stepping down as director earlier this month. That move forced Paramount into a time-sensitive search to find a replacement if they were to meet the 2016 release date.
Lin quickly emerged the preferred choice on the studio’s shortlist, which also included Edgar Wright, Rupert Wyatt and Daniel Espinosa. With Lin now in place, pre-production on Star Trek 3 is expected to proceed apace, with Paramount still aiming to release the film in 2016 – in time for the Star Trek franchise’s 50th anniversary.
Despite stepping down as the helmer, Roberto Orci, who initially penned the script for Star Trek 3 (Patrick McKay and John D. Payne worked on the most recent draft), will stay on as an executive producer alongside JJ Abrams, who directed the first two films in the rebooted Trek series.
