Comedy Central UK has hired Joe McVey as their new Head of Development.
McVey will be responsible for developing sourcing and developing original commissions for both the UK channel and Viacom International Media Networks’ global comedy channels.
He takes up the role as of today and will report directly to Lourdes Diaz, Vice-President & Head of Global Production and Development for Comedy Central International.
Joe McVey most recently served as a freelance Executive Producer on the British adaptation of US format Drunk History, which got a series green-light at Comedy Central UK last week. Prior to that he held roles at indies Thames, Roughcut, Tiger Aspect, Endemol and Monkey Kingdom where he spent many years developing and producing comedy and entertainment shows.
“I’m really excited to join Comedy Central and enter the world of commissioning”, said McVey. “I will be investing in a smart jacket and a copy of the commissioner phrase book. So expect me to start saying things like ‘does this cut through?’ ‘does it land with our demo?’ and a thousand versions of ‘I’ll get back to you.’”
This appointment comes at a key time for Comedy Central UK, who are pushing forward with plans to commission more scripted and unscripted formats, which can then be rolled out on VIMN’s global channels. As part of these plans, the broadcaster has previously green-lit such projects as I Live With Models and Brotherhood. They also have numerous other projects in development from a wide range of creative talent.
“I’m very happy that Joe is jumping on board as Head of Development for Comedy Central”, added Lourdes Diaz. “It’s a brilliant time to join with three commissions currently in production and a rapidly expanding development slate. Joe has definitely got the right ingredients required to develop and bake us some very funny shows, including a very dry and sometimes warped sense of humour!”
