BBC One and US premium cable network Starz have ordered a second season of their co-production The Missing, the two broadcasters announced today.

The Missing was created by Harry & Jack Williams and across its first season told the story of Tony (James Nesbitt) as he searches for his son Oliver who disappeared on a holiday in France. The show employed a distinctive narrative style in which the story unfolded across two different time frames. Rather than continuing the story of Tony, the second season will, while retaining that narrative style, follow a new case, new characters and a new location.

The Williams brothers will once again pen the scripts for the show’s second season. New Pictures, Company Pictures, Two Brothers Pictures and Playground Entertainment are producing, with Willow Grylls, Charlie Pattinson, Elaine Pyke, Harry Williams, Jack Williams Polly Hill and Colin Callender serving as the executive producers.

The renewal announcement went out immediately after the season one finale aired on BBC One. Across its run, The Missing has proved to be a hit for the corporation’s flagship channel, with the show drawing an average consolidated audience of 7 million viewers. While The Missing has now wrapped its debut season on the BBC, it is still airing on Starz with the finale set for Saturday January 10th.

“The Missing surprised at every turn, weaving a gripping and complex story across two timescales which kept viewers guessing til the very end and demonstrated the range and ambition of drama on BBC One” said Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One. “I’m really pleased to announce that the incredible team behind the series will bring a new case to our BBC One audience and we can guarantee another challenging, contemporary story written by Harry and Jack Williams.”

“The remarkably talented Williams brothers crafted a beautifully complex and heart wrenching story with ‘The Missing’ and while the story, character and locations will be different in this new iteration, we anticipate the same captivating long-form storytelling and character development that critics and viewers have responded so well to,” added Starz Managing Director Carmi Zlotnik. “We have been thrilled with the critical response and look forward to continuing our terrific collaboration with the BBC, New Pictures and Playground Entertainment.”
