CBS Studios International has locked down a second UK deal for Extant.
The company, who previously sold first window rights to the Halle Berry fronted sci-fi series to Amazon Prime Instant Video UK, has agreed a further licensing deal with Syfy UK, TVWise has learned. The deal between the two companies covers the 13 episode first season, which is set to air on Syfy UK in January 2015.
Extant is a futuristic thriller about a female astronaut (Halle Berry) trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history. The cast also includes Camryn Manheim, Michael O’Neill, Grace Gummer, Pierce Gagnon, Hiroyuki Sanada and Goran Visnjic.
The drama series was created by newcomer Mickey Fisher and is produced by Amblin Television in association with CBS Television Studios. The executive producers are Steven Spielberg, Greg Walker, Mickey Fisher, Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. CBS recently picked up a 13 episode second season for Summer 2015.
Speaking to TVWise before the series premiere in July, series regular Michael O’Neill called Extant “the highlight of my career”. “[Series creator] Mickey Fisher wrote something really special”, he added. “You know, we all read it and our eyes sort of popped out. And when you hit the last page of the script you want very badly to be able to turn the page to the next chapter”.
For Syfy UK, Extant joins a strong and growing line up of premium US content (first run rights are retained by Amazon). The channel is also home to such series as The Originals, Haven, Defiance, post-apocalyptic drama Dominion and the upcoming TNT series The Librarians, starring Rebecca Romijn and Noah Wyle, which is set to premiere on Monday December 8th at 8pm.
