AMC and Channel 4 have set the cast for their co-production Humans.
William Hurt (Damages), Rebecca Front (The Thick Of It), Colin Morgan (The Fall), Katherine Parkinson (The Honourable Woman), Tom Goodman-Hill (Mr Selfridge), Neil Maskell (Utopia) and Gemma Chan (Fresh Meat) are set to star in the 8 episode drama, which is being produced by Kudos Film & Television in association with Matador Films.
From Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, Humans is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way they live, one strained suburban family purchases a refurbished synth only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences.
William Hurt has been cast as George Millican, a widower who forms a close relationship with his out-of-date synth Odi; Rebecca Front as Vera, a NHS funded overbearing carer synth; Colin Morgan as Leo; Katherine Parkinson as Laura, a woman struggling with unresolved demons; Tom Goodman-Hill as Joe, Laura’s husband; Gemma Chan as Anita, Joe and Laura’s Synth; and Neil Maskell as Peter Drummond, a Detective Sergeant with the Special Technologies Task Force.
The 8 episode series is based on the Swedish sci-fi drama Real Humans and originally got a green-light back in April, with Microsoft’s Xbox Entertainment Studios attached as a co-producer. XES exited the project last month after Microsoft all but shuttered the division and Shine International subsequently secured AMC as the new co-production partner. Production on Humans is now underway for a 2015 premiere.
