The Kennedys are returning to Reelz.
The cable network has announced plans to re-air the eight-hour miniseries fronted by Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes this November. The first two episodes will air on Reelz on Tuesday November 4th at 9/8c and the series will then continue to air on Tuesday nights in two-hour blocks for the following three weeks.
Penned by Stephen Kronish and directed by Jon Cassar, The Kennedys explored the tragic history of the Kennedy family including JFK’s rise to power, his three years in office, his assassination in 1963 and Bobby’s campaign for the presidency and his assassination in 1968. The eight-hour mini stars Greg Kinnear, Barry Pepper, Katie Holmes, Tom Wilkinson, Diana Hardcastle, Kristin Booth and Gabriel Hogan.
When it originally debuted in 2011, The Kennedys cause quite a stir. It was originally developed by History, who greenlit production on the 8 hour mini. However, after production had wrapped they cancelled the The Kennedys. That decision, understood to have been taken after the Kennedy family exerted a fair amount of political pressure on the network to abandon the drama, led to Reelz picking up The Kennedys – which subsequently garnered numerous awards nominations and wins.
The move to re-air The Kennedys comes less than a week after Reelz greenlit production on a four hour follow up to The Kennedys titled After Camelot. The new mini, which is being produced by Muse Entertainment, is expected to air in 2016 and will see Katie Holmes reprising her role as Jackie Kennedy.
“We’re tremendously proud of ‘The Kennedys’ and the success its creators, cast and crew earned following their difficult and painful path to the miniseries’ premiere on Reelz”, said Stan E. Hubbard, CEO of Reelz. “The timeless Kennedy legacy is an important part of American history and we’re excited to relive this incredible story with our viewers now as we gear up for the production of ‘The Kennedys – After Camelot’ where the story will continue with Katie Holmes’ portrayal of Mrs. Kennedy evolving into the iconic Jackie O”.
