Ray Winstone (Moonfleet) and Amanda Redman (New Tricks) have been set as the two leads in ITV’s three-part drama The Trials of Jimmy Rose, TVWise has learned.
The Trials of Jimmy Rose tells the story of the eponymous character, a career criminal who has made crime pay, with his profits taking the form of a beautiful detached home on a small executive estate. But it has come at a cost – he has spent more time in prison than with his family. Distant hazy memories of Jimmy have been shattered by years of abandonment. Jimmy’s family have moved on with their lives. Can Jimmy put his criminal life behind him and regain their respect and love by being a grandfather, a father and a husband, not a gangster?
Ray Winstone will play the titular role of Jimmy Rose, who won’t be on the receiving end of a universally warm welcome when released from prison this time; while Amanda Redman will play his wife Jackie, whose not sure if she loves Jimmy anymore. In addition, Marion Bailey (Vera Drake) has been cast as Sue Anderson, Jackie’s sister; while Paul Jesson (Rome) will play, Roy, Jimmy’s right hand man and life long friend.
The three-parter, which received a green-light back in August, was penned by Strike Back scribe Alan Whiting & Dom Shaw and is being produced by ITV Studios and GroupM Entertainment. Jane Dauncey is set as the series producer, while Lucan helmer Adrian Shergold is attached to direct. The executive producers are ITV Studios’ Kieran Roberts and GroupM’s Melanie Darlaston. Production is set to begin in Manchester next month.
This marks something of a reunion for Winstone and Redman who are good friends and previously played husband and wife in the feature film Sexy Beast in 2000. “Alan Whiting has created and written a gift of a role. I’m excited to be playing him and to be working with the great Amanda Redman”, said Ray Winstone. ” She’s such a fine actress, and together with Adrian Shergold and the production team, I’m sure we’ll be able to bring Jimmy and Jackie to life.”
While executive producer Kieran Roberts added: “The Trials of Jimmy Rose is a warm, funny and compelling drama about a man with a criminal past who has to prove to his wife and his family that it’s never too late to start over. I am thrilled that Ray Winstone and Amanda Redman – two of Britain’s finest actors – will be playing Jimmy and Jackie and I can’t wait to start shooting in Manchester in a few weeks.”
