Lifetime UK has snapped up the latest Stephen King adaptation.
The A+E Networks UK owned and operated channel has acquired Big Driver, a 90 minute TV movie adaptation of the King novella starring Maria Bello, TVWise has learned exclusively. The TV movie will get its UK premiere on Lifetime UK as part of the channel’s Drama Specials strand on Thursday October 30th at 9pm – less than two weeks after the broadcast on the US Lifetime network.
Big Driver follows Tess Thorne (Bello), a famous thriller writer, who faces a long drive home following a book signing engagement. Prompted to take a shortcut at the suggestion of the event’s planner, Ramona, Tess sets out to return to her house. But while driving on a lonely stretch of New England road, her tire blows out, leaving her stranded.
Relieved when another driver stops and offers assistance, Tess quickly discovers her saviour is actually her assailant, a serial killer who repeatedly assaults her. With her fragile mind beginning to unravel, she is determined to find her rapist and seek revenge, as payback is the only thing holding her together.
The adaptation was penned by Happy Face Killer scribe Richard Christian Matheson, produced by Ostar Productions and directed by Mikael Salomon. In addition to Bello, Big Driver also stars Olympia Dukakis (Steel Magnolias), Ann Dowd (The Leftovers), Will Harris (NCIS) and Joan Jett. The executive producers are Bill Haber and Jeffrey Hayes.
Lifetime’s original TV movies have been a key component of Lifetime UK’s schedules since they launched in November 2013 and frequently draw strong ratings. The UK version of the female skewing network has previously acquired and aired such moves as Drew Peterson Untouchable, The Grim Sleeper, An Officer And A Murderer and Flowers In The Attic.
