Harvey Weinstein’s The Weinstein Company has acquired all US rights (except theatrical) to BBC One’s upcoming 90 minute drama Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot, after reaching a deal with Red Arrow International.
Starring Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman, Esio Trot tells the story of Mr. Hoppy (Hoffman), who devises a wildly ingenious plot to win over his neighbor, Mrs. Silver (Dench), which involves a cryptic riddle and no fewer than a hundred tortoises. Will Mr Hoppy’s wildly ingenious plot win the love of his lady?
The 90 minute drama was originally commissioned by BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore & the BBC’s Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson last August and is scheduled to air on the BBC’s flagship channel this Christmas. Esio Trot is based on the Roald Dahl novel and was adapted by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer. Endor Productions produced the drama, which was directed by Dearbhla Walsh and executive produced by Hilary Bevan Jones.
“Roald Dahl is one of the most revered children’s authors in history, so needless to say we’re delighted to be on board with this project”, said Harvey Weinstein, Co-Chairman of The Weinstein Company. “Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench will do a phenomenal job embodying his beloved, one-of-a-kind characters.”
With this Red Arrow International tie-up, Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot becomes the latest BBC project that TWC has boarded. The company recently picked up Peaky Blinders for the United States and are co-producing the BBC’s upcoming adaptation of Tolstoy’s War & Peace and the Laurel and Hardy biopic Stan and Ollie.
