Syfy is teaming with The Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd for their next scripted series.
The NBCU owned cable network has handed a 13 episode straight-to-series order to Hunters, a thriller from Hurd and her Valhalla Entertainment banner which puts a new spin on the counter-terrorism drama genre, TVWise has learned.
Hunters follows a Philadelphia cop whose search for his missing wife leads him to a secret government unit assembled to hunt a group of ruthless terrorists – shadowy figures that may or may not be from this world. Production is set to commence next year for a 2016 premiere on Syfy.
The 13 episode drama is based on Whitley Strieber’s best-selling novel Alien Hunter and is being penned by Natalie Chaidez, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Gale Anne Hurd on the Valhalla Entertainment produced series. Universal Cable Productions is serving as the studio on the project, which will be distributed globally by NBCUniversal International Television Distribution.
“As a longtime fan of Whitley’s, I am absolutely thrilled to collaborate with everyone at Syfy and UCP, as well as the uber-talented showrunner, Natalie Chaidez, to bring Hunters to life,” said Gale Anne Hurd.
For Syfy, Hunters becomes the latest scripted project to get a green-light in recent months as the network continues to aggressively expand its slate of original drama series. The network has also recently greenlit such series as Z Nation, The Expanse, 12 Monkeys; and mini-series Ascension and Childhood’s End.
“We were so impressed by the pilot script from this outstanding and accomplished creative team led by Gale Anne Hurd and Natalie Chaidez”, said Dave Howe. President of Syfy. “This fast-paced and innovative story takes viewers inside a chilling yet all too familiar world”.
