Sky Atlantic and French broadcaster Canal+ are re-teaming for a new drama series.
The two broadcasters, who previously co-produced bi-lingual series The Tunnel, are re-teaming for The Last Panthers, a six episode jewel heist drama from Glue scribe Jack Thorne which has Tahar Rahim (La commune), Samantha Morton (Minority Report) and John Hurt (Doctor Who) attached to star.
The Last Panthers opens with a daring diamond heist before quickly delving into the dark heart of Europe where a shadowy alliance of gangsters and ‘banksters’ now rules. Tahar Rahim has been cast as Khalil, a French-Algerian policeman in pursuit of the thieves; Samantha Morton as Naomi, a British loss adjustor charged with recovering the stolen diamonds whatever the cost; and John Hurt as Tom, her nefarious boss.
Based on an idea by Jerome Pierrat and penned by Jack Thorne, The Last Panthers is a tri-lingual series, which will be filmed in English, French and Serbian, and is being co-produced by Haut et Court TV (The Returned) & Warp Films. The executive producers are Peter Carlton, Caroline Benjo and Jimmy Desmarais; while Bates Motel helmer Johan Renck is attached to direct. Production begins next month in London, Marseille, Belgrade and Montenegro for a 2015 premiere. Tandem and Sky Vision are handling global distribution.
“As Sky continues to invest in more original programming, The Last Panthers is the perfect series to add to Sky Atlantic’s exciting drama slate”, said Zai Bennett, Director of Sky Atlantic. “It has all the ingredients to ensure our customers will love it and it will flourish on the channel – on and off screen world-class talent combined with a gripping and thought provoking story. We’re delighted that the support of Sky Deutschland means that The Last Panthers will also air on Sky Atlantic in Germany.”
Fabrice De La Patellière, Director of French Drama and co-productions for Canal+ commented: “The Last Panthers tells the tale of the world-famous Pink Panthers, a network of jewel thieves who still capture the imagination today. The series follows the quest to track some of these characters down, plunging the audience into a Europe gripped by new forms of crime and featuring the interplay between traffickers, European officials, war criminals and City bankers. We’re delighted to be supporting this ambitious international series for Création Originale CANAL+, alongside our partners Sky Atlantic, Haut et Court TV and Warp Films”
While Warp Films’ Peter Carlton and Haut et Court TV’s Caroline Benjo added: “What Sky Atlantic and Canal+ have given us is the chance to make a truly contemporary, world class series that is smart and multi layered. The Last Panthers is a big, bold operatic series that tells a story about Europe today, about old alliances and terrifying freedoms, through the lives of our characters who move within it. Our shared histories and moral choices impact on every one of us in ways we cannot foresee.”
