It’s Official: AMC Boards Channel 4’s ‘Humans’ As Co-Producer

AMCAMC is teaming with Channel 4 and Kudos Film & Television for Humans.

The US basic cable network today confirmed that they had signed on to co-produce the upcoming 8 episode drama, which is an adaptation of the Scandinavian series Real Humans.

Humans is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant that’s so similar to a real human it’s transforming the way we live. When a rushed-off-his-feet suburban father of three buys a refurbished second-hand Synth, he hopes it will relieve some domestic pressure and paper over the cracks of his marriage. But sharing their life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences, for this Synth is harbouring an extraordinary secret.

“’Humans’ is that rare sci-fi series that puts the emphasis squarely on the character aspect of the story, and explores the emotional impact that will come with an increasingly blurry line between human and machine”, commented Joel Stillerman, AMC’s Executive Vice-President of Original Programming “We’re thrilled to be working with Kudos and Channel 4, both of whom have shown a long-standing commitment to smart, and deeply original drama series.”

The drama series, based on SVT’s Real Humans, is being written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley. The English language series is being produced by Spooks producer Kudos Film & Television in association with Matador Films with Jane Featherstone, Derek Wax, Henrik Widman and Lars Lundström serving as executive producers.Humans was initially commissioned in April of this year, receiving an 8 episode orderm and was to be a co-production between Channel 4, Kudos and Microsoft’s Xbox Entertainment Studios, which is run by former CBS President of Entertainment Nancy Tellem.

Real HumansHowever, two months later Microsoft announced plans to shutter the division, a move that effected several productions including Humans., which was forced to delay casting and the projected Summer production start date. With XES poised to exit the deal, Kudos owner Shine began searching for a new co-production partner, eventually resulting in talks beginning with AMC last month. Word of that deal first leaked in the Hollywood trades last week and, with the deal now concluded, production is expected to commence this Autumn.

“We would like to welcome AMC on-board in a deal which reflects our continued commitment to this ambitious, highly original new drama. AMC have produced some of the most exquisitely crafted, ground-breaking, talked about television in recent years and the prospect of working together to deliver a drama of genuine scale and originality to the screen is enormously exciting”, Channel 4 and Kudos said in a statement. “We would like to take the opportunity to thank Xbox Entertainment Studios (XES) for being a strong advocate and partner on this project. We look forward to seeing what lies ahead for the talented team there.”

While Nancy Tellem, President of Xbox Entertainment Studios, added: “I am proud of the work we have done shepherding ‘Humans’ to this point, as well as facilitating and ensuring a smooth transition for our friends at Kudos/Shine and Channel 4. While we focus on our future plans, given the show’s production timetable and the support required to guarantee a successful co-production with a shared first window, we wanted to make certain the show found the right home now. We couldn’t be more optimistic about “Humans” long-term future at AMC.”
