Sky 1 has ordered a two-part documentary titled Cats which explores the history of the Cat family and how they became the most successful family of predators on Earth.
Cats follows biologist Patrick Aryee as he delves into the more than 11 million year history of the feline family, which includes lions, tigers and ocelots. The two-parter will chart global migrations of cats across Asia, America and Africa and culminate with the story of the taming of the domestic cat. Cats will utilise a combination of wildlife photography, studio shoots, field demos and CGI
The documentary, which was commissioned by Sky1 Director Adam MacDonald & Sky’s Head of Features and Factual Celia Taylor, is being produced by Offspring Films. The executive producers are Alex Williamson, Martin Williams and Lorraine Charker-Phillips. BSkyB’s international sales arm Sky Vision is handling global distribution for Cats, which is set to premiere in 2015.
“We’re delighted to be able to bring the global story of one of the planet’s most spectacular families to our Sky 1 customers”, said Adam MacDonald, Director of Sky1. “A pioneering talent, Patrick’s knowledge and passion for natural history is infectious. He’s an exciting new face on British TV and we can’t wait for his Sky 1 debut.”
While biologist Patrick Aryee added: “I’m very excited to be working with Sky 1 on Cats. I’ve been fascinated by these incredible creatures since childhood. I can’t wait to use my background in wildlife filmmaking to take viewers on a mysterious journey and share with them the evolutionary history of one of the most successful group of predators on earth!”
