BBC Three is moving forward with four new comedy series.
The channel has given the greenlight to Top Coppers, which was initially piloted earlier this year; the Josh Widdicombe fronted comedy Josh, fast-food comedy Fried and the Jonny Sweet fronted Together. All four have received six episode orders and are expected to air on BBC Three later this year and early next, ahead of the proposed closure of BBC Three.
Penned by Cein McGillicuddy and Andy Kinnear, Top Coppers is described as action comedy set in Justice City which follows the adventures of police detectives Mahogany and Rust, as they attempt to rid the city of its deranged criminal underworld. The series is being produced by Roughcut Television and stars Conor McKenna, John Kearns, Charlotte Ritchie and Tom Bennett. The executive producers are Dan Hine and Ash Atalla. Cein McGillicuddy is attached to direct.
Josh, which was written by Josh Widdicombe and Tom Craine, follows the titular character and his two mates living in a flatshare . The series is about the small things in life. Josh is easily embarrassed, full of polite indignation and mildly irritated by having the teabag and hot water given to him separately on a train… but for Josh that irritation can escalate within 30 minutes to him accidentally scalding the driver and causing a three train pile-up. The comedy is produced by BBC In-House and stars Josh Widdicombe, Jack Dee, Elis James and Beattie Edmondson.
Fried follows the daily lives of the staff in a struggling branch of a low-rent fast food chain. The comedy series was created by Jack and Harry Williams, whose previous credits include the BBC One/Starz co-production The Missing. Fried is a co-production between Bwark and Two Brothers Pictures.
Based on the Radio 4 comedy Hard To Tell, Together follows a couple in a new relationship, dealing with the interferences, obstructions and general disasters wrought by their family and friends. The series was written by Chickens star Jonny Sweet, who also stars as Tom – witless but passionate 26-year-old prone to failure. Together is produced by Tiger Aspect Productions.
