Amazon Prime Instant Video Announces Netflix Style Launch For ‘Transparent’

Amazon is taking a page out of Netflix’s book for the launch of their next original series.

The e-commerce giant has announced that they will launch the first season of Transparent on Amazon Prime Instant Video in the United State and the United Kingdom on Friday September 26th, when all ten episodes will be made available to subscribers at once.

Written and directed by Jill Soloway, Transparent is a darkly comedic story about an LA family with serious boundary issues. In this exploration of sex, memory, gender and legacy, the past and future unravel when a dramatic admission causes everyone’s secrets to spill out. The comedy stars Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann, Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to offer our customers all episodes of Transparent in late September,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “Jill has an amazing ability to create deep, engaging and rich stories and characters. We think customers will enjoy this fresh, humorous, and touching series.”

This marks the first time that Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has launched a complete season of one of their originals at once – a move which was pioneered by Netflix with the release of House of Cards back in 2011. The two previous Amazon original comedies Alpha House and Betas both aired in a traditional fashion, releasing one episode per week.

It is understood that Amazon is trialling different release methods in order to see what works best for Amazon Prime Instant Video and their subscriber base, rather than simply sticking with the traditional one-a-week release of linear television or the Netflix all-at-once strategy.To that end, Amazon is planning to release Chris Carter’s new show The After in 2015 in two episode blocks.
