Syfy has handed a pilot order to The Magicians, an adaptation of the Lev Grossman novel which hails from John McNamara, Sera Gamble and Universal Cable Productions.
The Magicians follows 20-somethings who, while studying magic in New York, discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real and poses a grave danger to humanity.
The script was written by Prime Suspect‘s John McNamara and Supernatural‘s Sera Gamble, while Michael London and Janice Williams are set to serve as producers on the Universal Cable Productions produced hour-long pilot.
“Lev Grossman’s dazzling blend of magic and realism will capture the imagination of a new generation of viewers and further strengthen Syfy’s ownership of premium quality sci-fi fantasy drama”, said Dave Howe, President of Syfy.
The pilot order for The Magicians is the latest move that Syfy has made in recent months as part of the ambitious push back into scripted originals. To that end, the network has already green-lit new series Z Nation, Olympus, The Expanse, 12 Monkeys and limited series Ascension; and has a number of project in various stages of development.
