Syfy has teamed with Nick Cannon to develop a sci-fi/fantasy improvisational comedy series, TVWise has learned.
The show will be taped in front of a live audience and feature two teams battling for the biggest laughs to win points and prizes. The “home” team will consist of four-six nationally known comedians who will go up against the “away” team each week and compete in various sci-fi/fantasy related sketches. A nationwide casting call will occur later this summer to determine the “away” teams.
Nick Cannon’s NCredible Entertainment is producing the improve series, with Nick Cannon and Michael Goldman serving as executive producers. This is the latest bit of business for NCredible Entertainment. The production company is also has The Assistants in the works at Oxygen and a number of other unscripted project in development.
The project represents the latest move by Syfy brass to establish a distinctive brand of original programming and further the network’s stated aim of eventually moving towards comedy. It follows in the recent footsteps of Wil Wheaton’s talker The Wil Wheaton Project and comes at a time when Syfy is making a renewed, and somewhat aggressive, push back into original drama.
