NBC has renewed The Night Shift for a 14 episode second season, TVWise has learned.

The Night Shift follows a group of Army doctors working the late shift at a San Antonio Hospital. The cast includes Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Freddy Rodriguez, Ken Leung, Jeananne Goossen, Robert Bailey Jr, Brendan Fehr, J.R. Lemon, Daniella Alonso and Brigid Brannagh. The second season is expected to premiere in Summer 2015.

The drama was originally picked up by NBC execs back in May 2013 and is in the midst of airing its eight episode first season. Sony Pictures Television, who just successfully revived their comedy series Community at Yahoo, produced The Night Shift, which was created by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah – both of whom also serve as executive producers.

With the renewal, The Night Shift becomes the first summer series, on any network, to swing a renewal for next season. The SPT produced series has been a moderate hit for NBC after it premiered in May to 7.7 million viewers and a 1.6 A18-49 rating it the Tuesday night 10pm slot. The most recent episode managed 5.9 million viewers and a 1.2 A18-49 rating.
