Universal Channel has closed a deal with Electric Entertainment to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to TNT’s upcoming drama series The Librarians, with plans to launch the series in the UK this December, within 24 hours of the US broadcast on TNT.
The Librarians centers on an ancient organization hidden beneath the Metropolitan Public Library dedicated to protecting an unknowing world from the secret, magical reality hidden all around. This group solves impossible mysteries, fights supernatural threats and recovers powerful artifacts from around the world. The organisation consists of Caretaker Jenkins and Librarian Flynn Carsen, who has recruited four people to aid him in his task. Those four are Eve Baird, Jake Stone, Cassandra and Ezekiel Jones.
The hour-long series is produced by Electric Entertainment and is a follow up to TNT’s Librarian film franchise, That franchise consisted of three films (The Librarian: Quest for the Spear, The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines and The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice) which starred Falling Skies alum Noah Wyle and aired between 2004 and 2008. Wyle is reprising his role in the weekly series and is part of a cast which also includes Rebecca Romijn, Christian Kane, John Larroquette, Lindy Booth, John Kim, Bob Newhart, Jane Curtin and Matt Frewer.
The acquisition of The Librarians, which is in fact part of a larger deal between Electric and Universal Networks International that will see the Librarians air on Universal Channel in more than 100 territories, is the latest example of parent company Universal Networks International’s increased spend on high-end scripted content for the UK Universal Channel. The drama, which was much talked about at the recent LA Screenings, joins an impressive and growing line up of exclusive series on the UK channel which also includes Sleepy Hollow, Major Crimes, Bates Motel and Graceland.
“An action-adventure drama driven by a group of both daring and quirky characters, The Librarians is an exciting addition to Universal Channel’s programming line-up around the world,” commented Steve Patscheck, Executive Vice President, Programming, Universal Networks International. “We are pleased to be a part of this brand new series that will be timed to air within 24 hours of the US debut, giving international viewers immediate access to the all the action.”
