Toby Jones (Wayward Pines), Rachael Stirling (The Bletchley Circle), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Luther) and Lucy Benjamin (EastEnders) have joined the cast of BBC Four’s six episode comedy series Detectorists.
Detectorists follows Andy, a wannabe archaeologist who, alongside his friend Lance, spends time in muddy fields with a metal detector and a packed lunch, dreaming of finding that priceless Saxon hoard that will make them rich and cement their place in detecting history. But as they go off on their adventures, real life keeps getting in the way. They embark on a journey of greed, betrayal, rejection and redemption as they hurtle towards Danbury Metal Detecting Club’s greatest ever find.
Toby Jones has been cast as Lance, Andy’s friend and metal detecting partner; Rachael Stirling as Becky; Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Sophie; while Lucy Benjamin has been cast in an as-yet unspecified role. They join previously announced star Mackenzie Crook, who also created Detectorists and is playing the co-lead role of Andy.
Penned by Crook, Detectorists shot a teaser last year before being picked up for a full six episode series in January 2014. Channel X and Lola Entertainment are producing with Adam Tandy serving as the series producer, while series creator and star Mackenzie Crook is set to direct. Production in set to take place across June and July in Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex and the Detectorists will air on BBC Four in late 2014.
“This is my first time directing but, though it’s sometimes nerve wracking, I’m confident that I have an incredible team to rely on”, said Crook. “I have managed to gather my ideal cast. Toby, Rachel, Aimee-Ffion and Lucy are all actors I’ve worked with before and I know I’m in safe hands. For years British television has been screaming out for an archaeology based sit-com… hasn’t it?”
