MTV UK has acquired the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to Faking It, the original comedy series which is being produced for the US MTV network.
Faking It is a romantic comedy about two best friends who love each other – in slightly different ways. After numerous failed attempts to become popular, the girls are mistakenly outed as lesbians, which launches them to instant celebrity status. Seduced by their newfound fame, Karma and Amy decide to keep up their romantic ruse.
The comedy series was created Dana Min Goodman & Julia Wolov and developed for television by Hart of Dixie scribe Carter Covington. Faking It stars Katie Stevens, Rita Volk, Gregg Sulkin, Michael Willett and Bailey Buntain. The series, which was initially piloted by MTV back in 2013, is executive produced by Carter Covington.
This is the first scripted acquisition for MTV UK in more than a year. The channel has been very selective of late on the scripted side, picking up very few of the original series produced for the US MTV network – with only Awkward successfully travelling across the pond – and only one produced for another network in North America (The L.A. Complex).
The caution comes after a large number of scripted acquisitions, such as Pretty Little Liars and The Secret Life of The American Teenager, failed to click with UK audiences and as such were dropped by MTV UK before completing their runs. The hope is that Faking It, which is similar in tone to Awkward, will also find success with UK audiences.
