Brian Van Holt (Cougar Town) has reportedly been cast as one of the leads in Syfy’s six episode event series Ascension.
Created by Philip Levens, Ascension tells the story of the ship of the same name which was part of a covert space mission launched by the US government in 1963 to send hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission.
Per Entertainment Weekly, Van Holt will play William Denninger, the captain on the titular space-faring vessel. He is the second actor to officially board the series and joins Battlestar Galactica alum Tricia Helfer who has been cast as Viondra Denniger, the wife of the captain who. as the ship’s chief steward, considers herself to be the not-so-secret power broker aboard the Ascension.
Ascension is the first event series for Syfy since 2009 and comes at a time when the network is investing heavily in original scripted programming. Sea To Sky Productions are producing Ascension in association with Blumhouse Productions, while Universal Cable Productions and Lionsgate TV are co-financing and will distribute the series. The executive producers are Philip Levens, Jason Blum, Ivan Fecan, Tim Gamble, Brett Burlock and Mark Stern. The six episode event series is set to premiere on Syfy this November.
