Channel 5 has closed a deal with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to NBC’s Chicago Fire spin-off Chicago PD for their digi-net 5USA.
Chicago PD follows the men and women of the Chicago Police Department’s elite Intelligence Unit, which is led by Detective Sergeant Hank Voight, as they combatthe city’s most heinous offenses, from organized crime, to drug trafficking, high-profile murders and beyond.
The drama series is a spin-off of NBC’s successful fire-fighter drama Chicago Fire, which hails from Law & Order producer Dick Wolf and first introduced Chicago PD‘s lead character Detective Voight. Chicago PD was created by Derek Haas & Michael Brandt and is produced for NBC by Universal Television & Wolf Films.
The cast of Chicago PD, which was recently renewed for a second season, includes Jason Beghe, Jon Seda, Sophia Bush, Jesse Lee Soffer, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, LaRoyce Hawkins, Archie Kao and Elias Koteas. The executive producers are Dick Wolf, Matt Olmstead, Peter Jankowski, Michael Brandt, Derek Haas, Danielle Gelber and Mark Tinker.
“Chicago P.D. is a whipcracker of a series where you’re never sure who the good guys are”, said Katie Keenan, Head of Acquisitions for Channel 5. “We can’t wait to bring the show to our 5USA viewers”
This is the latest US drama buy that Channel 5 has made for digi-net 5USA in recent months and the first since the broadcaster was bought by media giant Viacom. Chicago PD, which will debut its 15 episode first season on 5USA in mid-July, joins a line up of first run imports on the channel that also includes Cedar Cove, Helix and Played. The channel was also previously the exclusive UK home to such series as Justified, Betrayal and Ironside.
