Fox has cancelled comedy series Dads, Enlisted and Surviving Jack, ahead of the network’s upfront presentation in New York City on Monday.
All three comedies were on the bubble, with Dads, Enlisted and Surviving Jack struggling to find and maintain much of a sizeable audience. Dads was the only one that was still considered to have a shot, but even the auspices of its creators couldn’t save the multi-camera comedy. In addition to pulling the plug on Dads, Enlisted and Surviving Jack, Fox has also passed on comedy pilots Dead Boss, Fatrick and No Place Like Home.
With the decision, Brooklyn Nine-Nine remains the only freshman comedy series on Fox from the 2013-2014 season to earn a second season pick up. As noted above, Dads came close to earning a second season, especially given strong support at Fox and ratings more or less in line with Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The truth is that it was the Emmy win that secured Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s future, something Dads couldn’t fall back in as it was almost universally panned by critics.
As for Enlisted, the comedy was a little off tone for Fox, who essentialy buried the series on Friday nights. In fact, Fox topper Kevin Reilly recently told Vulture that he “did not personally think it was broad enough or outrageous enough.” In its Friday night slot, Enlisted struggled from day one, premiering to a low 2.4 million viewers and a 0.7 A18-49 rating. The series eventually dipped to 1.3 million viewers and a 0.4 A18-49 rating, before it was yanked from the schedule – a move that more or less sealed the fate of the military themed comedy.
Surviving Jack was, in some respects, the opposite of Enlisted. It tested well ahead of last year’s upfront and received top marks from international buyers at last year’s LA Screenings. In short, it enjoyed strong support amongst executives at Fox and was almost universally well received, with critics praising Meloni’s performance. However, the comedy failed to find an audience in in Thursday night time-slot and as such will air its series finale tomorrow night.
