Elizabeth Perkins, Donald Sumpter & More Cast In BBC Two/SundanceTV Co-Production ‘One Child’

Elizabeth Perkins, Donald Sumpter, Mardy Ma and Sebastion So have joined the cast of BBC Two’s upcoming two-part drama One Child, which is being co-produced by US basic cable network SundanceTV.

One Child follows Mei, a first-born Chinese girl adopted by an American mother and British father, who is asked to return to her birthplace, Guangzhou, when her birth mother desperately seeks her assistance in saving her son. How far will Mei go to help the woman who gave her away and the brother she’s never met?

Elizabeth Perkins, Donald Sumpter, Mardy Ma and Sebastion So join a cast which is being led by Harry Potter alum Katie Leung, who plays lead character Mei. Perkins has been cast as Katherine Arthurton, Mei’s adoptive mother; Sumpter as Jim Arthurton, Mei’s adoptive father; Ma as Liu Ying; Mei’s birth mother; and So as Ajun; Liu Ying’s son and Mei’s brother.

Guy Hibbert, whose previous credits include the award winning Channel 4 film Complicit, wrote the script for One Child , which is being produced in-house by BBC Drama Production in association with Sundance TV – making it the third such BBC drama that Sundance has co-produced following the likes of Top Of The Lake and The Honourable Woman. The drama is being executive produced by Hilary Salmon and directed by John Alexander. Production recently got underway in London and Hong Kong for a late 2014 premiere.
