CBS has renewed The Mentalist for a seventh season, whilst cancelling bubble series Intelligence, Hostages, Bad Teacher, Friends With Better Lives and The Crazy Ones.
The renewal for The Mentalist comes after months of rumours that the Warner Bros. produced drama may not be coming back, especially as it was left off of the network’s mass renewal back in March. Even WB admitted things were looking bleak by shopping the veteran drama to other networks, including TNT.
CBS isn’t confirming the size of the order for The Mentalist but it is understood to be around the 10-13 mark, with season seven possible envisioned as the show’s last. With the pick up the drama joins CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Person of Interest, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, Criminal Minds, Elementary, 2 Broke Girls, The Millers, Mike & Molly, Mom, Two And A Half Men and The Big Bang Theory – all of which have already been renewed.
On the cancellation side of things, there was no huge surprises. Both Intelligence and Hostages had been considered dead for months as neither made much of an impression in the Monday night 10pm slot. Similarly, Bad Teacher was not expected to return as, despite starting strong, it failed to maintain its audience.
That said, talk in recent weeks had been that either Friends With Better Lives or The Crazy Ones, both of which had OK ratings, would be picked up for the 2014-2015 seasons. With both being cancelled and the network picking up 6 new dramas (CSI: Cyber, Battle Creek, NCIS: New Orleans, Madam Secretary, Stalker and Scorpion) it seems clear that CBS will be losing at least part of one of their two-hour comedy blocks.
