Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has seen a spike in viewing figures for the first season of ITV’s drama series Broadchurch, with the streaming service reporting a 225% surge in views sin Sunday.
Created by Chris Chibnall (Law & Order: UK), the first season of Broadchurch told the story of a small community which is rocked when the dead body of Danny Latimer is found on the beach and the ensuing police investigation. The drama series is produced by Kudos Film & TV in association with BBC America and during season one starred David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Vicky McClure, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Will Mellor and Arthur Darvill.
The surge in viewership for the show’s first season comes after Broadchurch won three BAFTAs on Sunday – something Amazon UK is describing as the BAFTA Effect. A US adaptation of Broadchurch, initially announced last May, is in production and is slated to air on Fox in the United States this Fall. The cast for the US version, titled Gracepoint, includes David Tennant, Anna Gunn, Michael Peña, Virginia Kull, Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver, Josh Hamilton, Kevin Rankin, Kevin Zegers, Jessica Lucas and Stephen Louis Grush.
ITV and Kudos Film & Television are also currently in pre-production on the second season of Broadchurch. The two recently confirmed that David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Vicky McClure, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Will Mellor and Arthur Darvill would be reprising their roles from season one. While new cast members include Charlotte Rampling, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, James D’Arcy, Eve Myles and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
