Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has reached a deal with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution that will see a number of the distributor’s titles made available to stream for Amazon’s Prime members.
The deal with NBCUniversal covers such shows as USA Network’s legal dramedy Suits, NBC drama Grimm and comedy series Parks and Recreation. In addition, as part of this new deal, Amazon UK has renewed its licensing agreements for 30 Rock, The Office and Battlestar Galactica, meaning that they will continue to be available for Prime members to stream online.
Amazon have been upping their game globally over the past year, in an attempt to ratchet up the competition with streaming rival Netflix – who have made a big splash with original series such as House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black. To that end, Amazon has ordered a number of new original series, including their first ever original dramas: The After, from The X-Files creator Chris Carter; and Bosch, starring Titus Wlliver.
The e-commerce giant has also been more aggressive specifically in the UK. They had representatives at last year’s LA Screenings, indicating their intention to buy more exclusive content for the UK and in the past few months have taken the exclusive rights to several series including History’s Vikings, the European drama Crossing Lines and more, BBC America’s Copper and more recently the Starz pirate drama Black Sails.
