Fox has cancelled sci-fi entry Almost Human after airing one 13 episode season of the JJ Abrams produced series, TVWise has confirmed.
Created by J.H. Wyman Almost Human is a cop drama set in 2048 when all LAPD officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. The drama follows Detective John Kennex, who is the sole survivor of a devastating police ambush. When he wakes from a 17-month coma he can’t remember much — except that his partner was killed, he lost one of his legs and he is now outfitted with a highly sophisticated synthetic appendage. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot and stars Karl Urban, Michael Ealy, Mekia Cox, Minka Kelly, Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Crook and Michael Irby.
The series debuted on Fox back in November 2013 to a strong 9.2 million viewers and a 3.1 A18-49 rating. Despite that strong launch, the series, which Fox aired out of its intended order, continued to shed viewers throughout its run, with the season finale pulling in 5.6 million viewers and a 1.5 A18-49 rating. Even so, the numbers for Almost Human were in line with fellow WB produced series The Following, which had already earned a renewal, keeping the sci-fi series alive for the past several months. It’s only now as Fox are firming up their Fall schedule that execs decided that they’d be best served with a new entry rather than a second season of Almost Human.
The news of the cancellation, which was first reported by Deadline, comes after Fox has already either renewed or cancelled most of their line up and picked up several new shows for next season. The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Bones, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, The Mindy Project, Sleepy Hollow, The Following and Glee have all been renewed; while Fox has cancelled Us & Them, Rake and Raising Hope. Meanwhile the network has Gracepoint, Backstrom and Hieroglyph on tap for next season, with WB produced Gotham also considered a lock for a series order.
