Aneurin Barnard (The White Queen), Ed Stoppard (The Politician’s Husband), John Henshaw (Downton Abbey) and Melanie Hill (Merlin) have joined the cast of ITV’s three-part biopic Cilla, TVWise has learned.

Barnard has been cast as Bobby, Cilla’s husband; Stoppard as Brian Epstein; Henshaw as John White, Cilla’s father; and Hill as Priscilla, Cilla’s mother who is known affectionately to her family as Big Cilla. The four join a cast which is being toplined by Mrs Biggs star Sheridan Smith, who is playing the titular role.

Penned by Jeff Pope, Cilla tells the story of Cilla Black’s (Sheridan Smith) rise to fame. Beginning with a young Cilla working as a typist, the drama follows her life through key moments, including her friendship with The Beatles, which ultimately led to her meeting Brian Epstein & producer George Martin, both of whom helped launch her career. ITV Studios is producing the three-parter with Kwadjo Dajan serving as the series producer and Jeff Pope serving as the executive producer, while Paul Whittington is attached to direct.
