UKTV – the commercial network which is a joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Scripps Networks Interactive – is to raise funds for Children’s Charity COSMIC (Children of St Mary’s Intensive Care), which has been picked as UKTV’s Charity Of The Year for 2014.
COSMIC, which was established in 1994, raises money for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St Mary’s Hospital, which treats close to 500 gravely ill children each year. The charity uses that money to both support family members of patients and fund medical research and purchase vital equipment.
UKTV will be fundraising for the charity through a triathlon – consisting of cycling, walking and swimming events spread across several months – and a number of other events including, a Pub Quiz Auction, a weekly cookie jar, Sausage Sizzle BBQs, Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, Easter Baking Competition, BAFTA Fancy Dress and Wimbledon Strawberries & Cream. More than half of UKTV’s staff, representing over 100 people, have signed up to take part in the triathlon.
The fundraising effort emanates from UKTV’s Charity of The Year campaign, part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy in which UKTV’s staff undertake various endeavours in an attempt to raise money for the designated charity. Initially launched in 2012, the program has been a big success, with UKTV raising £55K for Pancreatic Cancer UK last year. The designated charity is picked internally by a nomination/company-wide voting process.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with COSMIC as our Charity of the Year for 2014″, said Julia Jordan, UKTV’s Executive Director Business & Operations. “It’s very motivating for all of us at UKTV to support a cause that is close to our hearts. We are aiming to beat last year’s amazing achievement and we’re looking forward to an action-packed year of fundraising initiatives to help such a worthwhile charity.”
While Dr Parviz Habibi, Chairman of COSMIC, added: “We are thrilled to be chosen as UKTV’s charity of the year 2014. The crucial funds raised from the partnership will help our dedicated team to treat hundreds of children with life threatening conditions and ensure that we can provide vital support to parents and guardians at one of the most stressful times in their lives. Everyone at COSMIC is very excited about working together with UKTV to make a valuable difference to our patients and their families.”
