ABC’s recently ordered Summer series Astronaut Wives Club has found its first cast member. Animal Practice alum JoAnna Garcia Swisher has landed a lead role on the 10 episode drama series, which hails from Stephanie Savage and ABC Studios.
JoAnna Garcia Swisher has been cast as Betty Grissom, the wife of one of the original astronauts. The character has been described as “bouncy” and “folksy” with a down-home appeal, which endears her to the public. Her casting comes only five days after ABC handed a 10 episode series order to the project, which prior to that pick up had received a pilot order at the network.
Based on the novel by Lily Koppel, Astronaut Wives Club is a 1960s set drama which tells the real story of the women who stood beside some of the biggest heroes in American history during the height of the space race. The project has been fast-tracked through development, initially receiving a pilot order last month, before ABC brass upped that to a 10 episode order. The series is being produced by Fake Empire Productions and ABC Studios with Savage, Schwartz, Goldstein and London serving as executive producers. The script was written by Gossip Girl co-creator Stephanie Savage
