The CW has handed early renewals to their top performing drama series Arrow, Supernatural, The Originals and The Vampire Diaries.
All four will return to the network’s schedule for the 2014-2015 season with Arrow returning for a third season, Supernatural for a tenth, The Originals for a second and The Vampire Diaries for a sixth. Also set to return is the so-so rated Reign, which will be back for season two. The network has yet to make a decision on the fates of Beauty and the Beast, The Carrie Diaries, Hart of Dixie and The Tomorrow People or the yet-to-premiere The 100 and Star-Crossed.
The renewals come after what has been one of The CW’s most successful seasons since the network launched. In contrast to all of their competitors, The CW is the only network this season to have not cancelled one of their freshman series in-season. The Originals and Supernatural have been hits on Tuesday nights, doubling the network’s ratings year-to-year in total viewers (up 88%), A18-49 and A18-34. Meanwhile, Arrow is the network’s highest rated drama series with 3.9 million viewers and The Vampire Diaries is The CW’s highest rated series in all the key demos. Reign, on the other hand, has been a so-so performer posting marginal gains in its time-slot in total viewers and the W18-49 demo.
“This season we’ve had great success with our new hit series The Originals paired with Supernatural, giving us our best Tuesday nights in years”, said Mark Pedowitz, President of The CW. “The Vampire Diaries is #2 in its time period in the young adult demos, and with Arrow continuing to gain among young men, and Reign growing its time period, we now have strong nights on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I’m very pleased to announce early pickups for all five series, and let our fans know they’ll have more great drama to look forward to next season.”
