ABC is adding a second original scripted series to their Summer line up. The network has handed a 10 episode series order to Astronaut Wives Club, a drama which hails from Stephanie Savage, Josh Schwartz, Len Goldstein and Michael London.
Based on the novel by Lily Koppel, Astronaut Wives Club is a 1960s set drama which tells the real story of the women who stood beside some of the biggest heroes in American history during the height of the space race. The project has been fast-tracked through development, initially receiving a pilot order last month, before ABC brass upped that to a 10 episode order. The series is being produced by Fake Empire Productions and ABC Studios with Savage, Schwartz, Goldstein and London serving as executive producers. The script was written by Gossip Girl co-creator Stephanie Savage. Casting is now underway for the series.
With the pick up of Astronaut Wives Club joins fellow homegrown drama Mistresses on ABC’s summer schedule, which also includes Canadian series Motive and Rookie Blue. The series order also comes at a time when the broadcast networks are getting more aggressive about original programming in Summer. CBS kicked off thing in earnest last year with ratings winner Under The Dome and also has the Halle Berry starrer Extant on tap for this summer. The move for the big nets to program in Summer comes in response to strong competition in those months from top cable networks such as TNT and USA.
