Sky Atlantic has assembled the cast for their upcoming 12 episode drama series Fortitude, TVWise has learned.
Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games), Michael Gambon (Harry Potter), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), Sofie Gråbøl (The Killing), Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones), Jessica Raine (Call The Midwife), Luke Treadaway (Clash of the Titans), Nicholas Pinnock (Top Boy) and Johnny Harris (This is England) have all been cast in the drama, which is set to enter production in Iceland and the UK with Sky Atlantic eyeing a late 2014 premiere.
Created by Simon Donald, Fortitude tells the story of a mysterious death in a close-knit community in the Arctic Circle. The town of Fortitude was thought to be one of the safest in the world, but the murder threatens the future of the town itself. The local Sheriff Dan Anderssen (Richard Dormer) pairs up with DCI Morton (Stanley Tucci) to investigate the violent crime, but neither trusts the other, complicating the investigation.
The Killing star Sofie Gråbøl plays Governor Hildur Odegard, whose ambitious plans to transform Fortitude from a mining town into a site for high-end tourism are threatened. In addition Michael Gambon has been cast as Henry Tyson, a wildlife photographer who only has weeks left to live; Christopher Eccleston as Charlie Stoddart, an English scientist who heads up the Arctic Biology department at the Fortitude Arctic Research Centre; Luke Treadaway as Vincent Rattrey, a talented young scientist; Nicholas Pinnock as Frank Sutter, Fortitude’s chief search and rescue pilot; and Jessica Raine as Jules Sutter, Frank’s wife.
“Sky brings customers quality entertainment like no one else and 2014 is going to be our biggest year yet. We will be commissioning drama at a world class scale and ambition and Fortitude is the first of those pieces”, said Stuart Murphy, Director of Sky’s Entertainment Channels. “Set against the beauty of the Arctic landscape, it tells the story of an apparently idyllic community coming to terms with a murder at its heart. This will be cinematic drama on a grand scale with a cast of truly great actors.”
Described as Sky’s most ambitious project yet, Fortitude forms part of the satcaster’s pledge to invest £600 million per year in home-grown commissions by 2014. The 12 episode series, which is being produced by Tiger Aspect Productions under its Fifty Fathoms Label, is being solely funded by BSkyB after US co-producer Starz pulled out of the project late last year. The executive producers are Patrick Spence, Simon Donald, Andrew Woodhead, Frith Tiplady, Anne Mensah and Cameron Roach. Sky Vision is handling international distribution.
