Bill Cosby is reportedly heading back to NBC, the network which aired The Cosby Show from 1984-1992. The peacock has teamed with Cosby to develop a new family comedy series which will star Cosby in the lead role.
Per Deadline, the new project will star Cosby as the patriarch of a multi-generational family and will feature Cosby’s views on family and parenting – hallmarks of both NBC’s The Cosby Show and CBS’ Cosby. Bill Cosby is also teaming with Tom Werner – co-founder of production company Carsey-Werner Productions, which produced a string of successful comedy series including The Cosby Show and Roseanne – to produce this new comedy.
The project comes at a time when NBC is having serious trouble with their comedy output, especially on Thursday nights. The decision to develop a new comedy which will feature a known star of an old sitcom is a curious one, especially when the approach has not worked for the network this past season, with both Sean Saves The World, featuring Will & Grace alum Sean Hayes; and The Michael J. Fox Show failing to make much of a dent in the ratings.
