Michael O’Neill (24, The West Wing) and Goran Visnjic (ER) have joined the cast of CBS’ upcoming 13 episode drama series Extant, TVWise has learned.

O’Neill, who in addition to his turns on 24 and The West Wing recently joined the cast of A&E’s Bates Motel for its second season in a recurring role, has been cast as Alvin Sparks, a former astronaut who now runs the privatized space program; while ER alum Visnjic will play John Watts, Molly’s husband. The two actors join a cast which includes Oscar winner Halle Berry and Camryn Manheim (The Practice).

Created by Mickey Fisher, Extant is a futuristic thriller about a female astronaut (Halle Berry) trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history. The drama series is being produced by Amblin Television & CBS Television Studios with Steven Spielberg, Greg Walker, Mickey Fisher, Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank serving as executive producers. CBS Studios International will handle global distribution.

Is this show a revamp of the short lived ‘Odyssey 5′ of a few years ago. That show only lasted one season and as the main ET plot of this type of SyFy usually has to be extended to at least 12 episodes for U.S. commercial value ‘Extant’ would need a high degree of creative writing to continue into SE02, Unfortunately with Amblin Television in creative control we should not hold our breaths for a satisfying conspiracy show similar to X Files.
